On a winter's day in the mid-1970s the photographer Marcia Bricker Halperin sought warm refuge and, camera in hand, passed through the revolving doors of Dubrow's Cafeteria on Kings Highway. There, between the magical mirrored walls and steaming coffee urns, she found herself as if on a theater set, looking out at a tableau of memorable Brooklyn faces. Enchanted, Halperin returned to Dubrow's again and again. Fast forward forty years later, The Gefilteria is a new kind of food venture launched in 2012 by Liz Alpern and Jeffrey Yokskowitz with a manifesto and a mission to reimagine Eastern European Jewish cuisine. During the holiday season they make and sell artisanal gefilte fish, have written a manifesto/cookbook, lead immersive culinary workshops, and collaborate on dynamic media projects and events (like this one!)
Join us for a very special evening, truly not to be missed, as we celebrate Marcia's incredible book Kibbitz and Nosh: When We All Met at Dubrow's Cafeteria alongside Gefilteria's co-founder Liz Alpern.
Expect a delicious savory and sweet nosh from Liz herself, a visual presentation by Marcia on her photographs, followed by a conversation between the two. Finally, a Q + A with all of you and a book signing. Beverages for sale.

No. 5 → Our first poetry table was a huge success. Join us again or for the first time on the 12th.

"Tanaquil Le Clercq, the wife of George Ballanchine, was born in Paris and brought to this country at an early age. She won a scholarship to the School of American Ballet at the age of eleven and later danced many leading roles with the NYC Ballet. In 1956, while on a dance tour of Europe, she was stricken with polio, which halted her dancing career. This is a collection of recipes from dancers, along with stories about the dancers and the recipes they donated to the compilation of this book."
